A Piece of Harlan History

From Corn to Meal

The grist mill, a part of past Appalachian life, was kept alive by Ed Gambrel of Dayhoit.  The fresh corn was put up for a period to dry, then taken from the cob.  Gambrel (top photo) hand fed the corn into the mill (photo left) and the finished meal product emptied from the unit into a storage bin.
